Many do not know that a portion of the bill, referred to as the “HITECH ACT”, allocates $17 billion of the total funds to be distributed to doctors and hospitals over the next five years. This is meant to encourage the adoption of electronic health records. If you are an individual doctor, you could be eligible for up to $44000 in stimulus funding. The final amount will depend on how many Medicare patients you treat. It is important to note that the full amount is only achievable for those "early adopters" who first become eligible in 2011. Many are unaware that the government will be imposing penalties for those healthcare providers who have not deployed an EHR system. Those who are not using an EHR system by 2015 will lose 1% of their Medicare fees, then 2% in 2016, and 3% in 2017.
